Trailer VS Poster!

What is the purpose of a film trailer?

The purpose if a film trailer is to entertain as well as inform the audience about the movie which will be released. Some film trailers are shown a year before they are released due to the fact that they may not have completed the task of finishing off the movie or they may have not completed the edits. For instance if a horror / thriller movie is showing then the following trailer would be a trailer of another horror /thriller, because if they showed a romantic comedy trailer then no one would be interested, because they are not appealing to their target audience. Their specific audience wants to see horror/thriller movies only, they are allowed to like other genres however they would rather see scary movies.

What is more successful? Poster or trailer?

The trailer is more important as well as more successful because, it provides the audience with visual images of what will happen in the family. It is more interesting that a poster. The voice over in the trailer otherwise known as ‘the voice of God.’ However posters can be seen every where for instance on bus stops and in supermarkets. If for instance a horror movie is showing then a horror trailer would be shown afterwards. This creates a captive audience. A ‘dumbing down debate.’ As stated by Barthes a trailer is used to enhance, there is always enigma in a trailer. Barthes suggested that narrative works with five different codes which activate the reader to make sense of it. This is an intricate theory, using is deliberate unfamiliar terms, and Bathes is not at pains to make it accessible. But particularly in his suggestion he came up with a code called the ‘enigma code.’ Trailers provide you with visual images that help to comprehend the main purpose.

Trailers are very often shown at the end of the movie however sometimes trailers are shown before the film has even started. Sometimes trailers are shown on TV in a form of advertisement, to enable those who do not go to the cinema to be aware of what is being shown.
