...Plans for filming...

The main aim is to begin filming. However, in the beginning we will just be recording random shots which mainly emphasis what we want to do. To begin with we want to begin to film in different locations and from that we will see which one best fits with our title. Furthermore we want to be able to film our production as soon as possible so that this enables us to spend more time editing our footage.

What are we going to do in the beginning week?

· Go to our planned location which we already have in mind. Which is some where scary.
· Get ready and dressed up to begin filming.
· Begin to film shots for the opening scene of our trailer.
· Begin to record shot after shot.
· Bearing in mind that we need the permission of the people that we are recording.
· After this has been done, as a group we need to sit down and decide which looks best and begin to decide upon the music.
· Once this has been done – begin to see what type of edits would look good with the scene.

Plan for 'Wednesday 31st January 2007'

On Wednesday 31st we plan to continue filming in new locations where it will be possible to gain some of the main shots of the villain. We plan to film in a deserted place with trees and dirt, so preferably a forest would be useful. But instead of searching far and wide for a forest we are going to substitute it with a park or another similar place.

'Silent Hill' ~ Research

The other movie that i researched on is called 'silent hill' 2006, it is a horror movie, it is very different form other horror movies, because it all happens with a girls dream wanting to become true, this girl always dream of going to this town which is silent hill, it is a place with ghosts and scary people, one day her mother takes her to this place, the place that she had been dreaming about for years.

Her father looks up for it on the internet and he finds out that it is a scary place but it is too late they are already gone. he tries to look for them and catch up with them but they are already gone, now he's worried about them cause he read that they are going to be in a dangerous place, they will be surrounded with ghosts and scary people, it is a place with a lot of grave yards.

When the mother and the girl arrives at the silent hill town, the car got crashed to the tree and then the mother gets out of the car and see black things falling down from the sky, at the begining she thinks it's raining but it is not it black things they look like burned paper falling from the sky.
Then everything changes the girl dissappears form her mother, the mother starts to see the ghosts and she tries to fight them, her husband comes and he gets haunted by ghosts as well.

At the end she cant get her daughter because she is haunted by ghosts and scary people, they put a knife through her heart and she doesnt die, she then beated them and saved her daughter and went back to their house where she found her husband in there and she doesnt talk to him, she finds the door open, we see that the father is ther but they cant see him that is the end of the story it is creating enigma for people to make them trying to see what will happen next.

Lamia
Trailer VS Poster!

What is the purpose of a film trailer?

The purpose if a film trailer is to entertain as well as inform the audience about the movie which will be released. Some film trailers are shown a year before they are released due to the fact that they may not have completed the task of finishing off the movie or they may have not completed the edits. For instance if a horror / thriller movie is showing then the following trailer would be a trailer of another horror /thriller, because if they showed a romantic comedy trailer then no one would be interested, because they are not appealing to their target audience. Their specific audience wants to see horror/thriller movies only, they are allowed to like other genres however they would rather see scary movies.

What is more successful? Poster or trailer?

The trailer is more important as well as more successful because, it provides the audience with visual images of what will happen in the family. It is more interesting that a poster. The voice over in the trailer otherwise known as ‘the voice of God.’ However posters can be seen every where for instance on bus stops and in supermarkets. If for instance a horror movie is showing then a horror trailer would be shown afterwards. This creates a captive audience. A ‘dumbing down debate.’ As stated by Barthes a trailer is used to enhance, there is always enigma in a trailer. Barthes suggested that narrative works with five different codes which activate the reader to make sense of it. This is an intricate theory, using is deliberate unfamiliar terms, and Bathes is not at pains to make it accessible. But particularly in his suggestion he came up with a code called the ‘enigma code.’ Trailers provide you with visual images that help to comprehend the main purpose.

Which One Makes You Want To View The Film???

THE POSTER...

OR...THE TRAILER...

When and where do you see trailers?

You usually see trailers at the cinema, advertising films which will be eye catching towards the audience. Trailers are very often shown at the end of the movie however sometimes trailers are shown before the film has even started. Sometimes trailers are shown on TV in a form of advertisement, to enable those who do not go to the cinema to be aware of what is being shown. Some trailers are shown at the start of DVDS and videos.

Research for the Practical Productions...

About the text: - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, 2003

· What is the text? When was it produced? Who produced/directed it?

Set in the modern day, 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' is about a group of youthful friends, who are on their way to Texas to watch a Lynard Skynard concert. On the way there they pass by a deserted road where they pick up a hitchiker. Little do they know that from that point on they will be chased and violently killed by a phsyco who's best friend is a chainsaw ~:~ 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (a re-make of the 1974 version which was based on a true story) was directed by 'Marcus Nispel' and was produced by 'Michael Bay'.

· Who is the target audience? How do you know?

By viewing the trailer I would say that the movie's main target audience are people in their early twenties, from a middle class background and of both sexes as these are the type of characters presented in the trailer. As the hero of the film is actually a heroine this will appeal more to females as it portrays a woman in a more significant way although the violent images showed in the trailer could appeal more to males. The secondary audience of this film would be adults as horror movie fans may be attracted to the fact that it is a re-make of an older movie and also a true story.

· Where would you usually expect to see this text? What channel? Time?

At first this movie will be shown in cinema's such as 'The Vue', 'The Odeon' etc during evening times as the rating of this movie is 'R' in America and in the UK it is an 18. When it is released in TV it would be most likely to be shown on channels such as 'channel 4' or 'ITV' as these channels entertain more than they inform. The time of the airing would definately be after the watershed as this would be sutiable for the rating.

Different features it has:-

· What is distinctive about its camera work, editing, sound, mise-en-scene?

The trailer has alot of fast cuts as the their is hardly any sound as the use of dialouge is more significant. Dark colours and underlighting portrays more of a horror image and the montage sequences in between help to give a good and informative narrative to the audience.

· What typical conventions of its genre does it use?
Running away from something, screaming, shouting, blood, terrified faces and a villian hardly being shown.

· What elements could you appropriate (borrow) for your production?

-> Violent scenes
-> Blood images
-> A mysterious villian

..A Look Into... Jeepers Creepers, 2001...

Over the weekend I sat down and watched one of my favourite horror movies 'Jeepers Creepers', 2001. I looked into the way that 'mise-en-scene' was used in order to come up with ideas for our groups production. While watching the film I focused on this (although I do know the movie off by heart) because I felt that it would give me and my group useful methods of filming! And this is what I found...

...mise-en-scene...

For editing I found that the chase scene in the beginning of the movie between the three main characters, Darry (Justin Long) and his sister Jennifer (Gina Phillips) against the villain, the creeper (Johnathan Breck), used alot of diverse forms of editing, such as fast cuts to show the characters facial expressions as well as what is going on in this situation in order to create anxiety and fear. While Darry is shouting "Go around me!"at the 'driver' of the truck, the camera cuts between him and the truck fiercely as Darry at this point is confused and scared about what to do and this brings across the same feeling to the audience. At the beginning of the scene when digetic sound is used a medium shot is also being used so that while the audience is viewing a scene with just Darry and Jennifer they can also see the truck appearing at a fast pace behind them. This creates suspense as the audience is expecting something big to happen when both viechles collide. As the truck catches up to them we hear a loud sound (the 'driver' beeping at them) that alerts the audience and turns the whole scenario of the situation. Shouting begins while Jennifer tries to order her brother to let him go past them but the truck keeps driving from side to side, making it harder for them to get away. Point-of -view shots are used through Darry's eyes as the whole intention is to put the audience in Darry's place. Then a low angle shot is used towards the truck so the the audience can see get a clear picture of what this truck looks like as it is one of the main props throughout the movie and indicates that wherever it is, the creeper is. The low angle shot also is useful for the audience to see exactly how confusing Darry's situation is as the 'driver' won't let them go one way or the other. While all of this is happening a very usual movie convention is not being used. At a scene like this we would expect to hear background music to create more tension and fear, but cleverly just the sound of the truck beeping madly, Darry and Jennifer shouting and the car speeding is enough to keep the suspense of the scene building. By this point the creeper overtakes their car and medium shot is shown. This medium shot shows the license plate of the truck which is also vital for the indication of that exact same truck. The medium shot is held while the truck drives off into the distance and the volume of the truck becomes less clearer. This is when the scene goes back into just dialogue...The aftermath of the first meeting with the creeper...

The Exorcist ~ Research

1973 saw the release of the William Friedkin movie, 'The Exorcist', which along with sheer terror and shock brought disbelief amongst the religious community who till that day hadn't even dreamt of viewing such a thing. The whole idea of bringing a religious prophecy to life became too much for the viewing public of whom some began to truly believe that what they were seeing was real. The movie then went on to being banned for many years until in the year 2000 it was released again to a less naive and fearsome audience...

'The Exorcist', 1973, has influenced us as a group very much because of it's use of lighting and colour. It is protrayed as a dark and disturbing world where the sun never shines and where colours beyond grey's and blue's do not exist. This is what we as a group plan to create in our trailer...A sadistic world of pain and deceit.

Saw ~ Research

The other movie that i researched on is "SAW", 2004 i found it really scary then any other movie that I researched on, it has a lot of horror scenes included on it , by the type of music used, this trailer uses only dark scenes, it didn't use the type of enigma because from the begining we know it is a horror trailer, at the begining it starts with a journalist photographing the house which is really dark and there is no light we just see the flash of the camera when he's taking pics, then he starts to hear different noises and that what makes it starts the horror. then we see more horror scary faces appearing.
in this trailer we see words in the middle of the trailer such as physchopat, madman etc...
these words i found related to our type of trailer because in our trailer we are going to use something which is a bit similair to that, as we have a madwoman which is physchopat she kill men that she goes out with and she never get caught. he is taking revenge, and that is what our trailer will be abput a madwoman taking revenge of what happened to her in the past.

The other similarity to our production which is when it starts with the journalist, we have decided to start our trailer with a news reporter talking about the crime and we will show people taking photographs on the crime that happened.
what i realised happening in every trailer is that they show the institution of the movie in between the trailer, like in the third scene.
those two horror movies are mostly to adults which are 18 and over, if 17 or under with parents guidance, so i guess our trailer will be also dedicated to that type of age audience.

Research On Movie Trailers

-> For the practical production, i researched on many movie trailers which are realetd to our type of genre which is horror, i did this reasearch to have other ideas to include in our practical production, as we are doing our story boards.
i did the research on the movie "The Omen, 2006" which i analysed. I watched it many times and i saw what is the appropriate time for the trailer it is form 1 to two minutes it cant go over the limited time. i drew the story board for the trailer just to try and have some ideas of what other scenes to add, i also saw how long each scene on the trailer lasts.

-> This trailer is letting the audience to try to find what is going to happen next and it makes us confused by what is happening because at the beginning it starts with happy scenes it is making this enigma because it will suddenly changes to horror but we dont know how, we just horror scenes later but we really dont know why it suddenly changes. that what will appeal to the audience and they will go and see the movie to see why it started with happy scenes a birthday happening then horror scenes.
-> Most of the scenes are really dark that is low key lighting, so that is giving us the idea that horror movies are mostly dark scenes that is a good point to use for our production, happy scenes were in high key lighting.

Lamia
Research On Movie Trailers

I collated research on film trailers in general, which provided me with a useful idea as to how my trailer should appear. From this research carried out, I was able to identify the conventions which are present in film trailers; some which will be present in my one.

  • A green band is commonly present, which is an all green graphic at the beginning of the trailer, usually reading "The following PREVIEW has been approved for ALL AUDIENCES by the Motion Picture Association of America," and sometimes including the movie's MPAA rating.
  • Usually studio logos are featured near the beginning of the trailer.
  • Voice-over narration is used to briefly set up the premise of the movie and provide explanation when necessary.

  • Music always helps to set the tone and mood of the trailer. Usually the music used in the trailer, is not from the film itself,in which the film score would not have been composed yet.

Therefore, by me researching these trailer 4 conventions, it has really helped me to consider what I should include in my trailer for it to be successful.

The Omen ~ Research

The trailer that you are seeing here is the 2006 remake of the 1976 film 'The Omen', directed and produced by John Moore. As this film is a horror I can guess that the target audience of this movie will be adults over the age of 18, both men and women and as this film is based upon religious prophecies, another idea could be that this film is out to attract curious and open minded people...

The main thing that stands out about this trailer is it's camera work which changes at different points of the trailer and therefore gives an enigma as the audience are left wondering what happened next...The lighting is kept at a minimum to create a dark and uneasy atmosphere of suspense throughout while the editing is done in a clever way in which to tell the basic parts of the story but not to actually tell the whole thing and ruin it...

The elements that I think would be useful to use in our practical pro would be the use of lighting and the way in which the editing is done, because we plan to keep our target audience hooked in order for them to want to view the film...

RESEARCH - on trailers

Trailers are usually from one to one and half minutes long. Within that given time they inform the audience about the plot in brief and the characters within the film. We as a group are aiming for at least a minute and fifteen seconds long for our trailer. At the beginning of movies, the audience usually sees a production company associated with film. For example 'Dreamworks' for 'The Ring'2003, changed the image of the dreamworks logo in order to fit in with genre of the movie. Whereas the movie 'Shrek' also changed the image of the logo but to fit in with it's children's universal animation image.

ORIGINAL LOGO

LOGO FOR 'THE RING'

LOGO FOR 'SHREK'

Some movies trailers use no voiceovers and only have clips of writing to let the audience know exactly what is happening. These kind of trailers only use music to give the audience more suspense although some might think that voiceovers of a deep voice create more suspense...we haven't yet decided on what we're going to use for ours, but are contemplating a voiceover. If we can find a deep enough voice that is...

PROGRESS REPORT

You know what i just cant wait 4 this project!! Basically what we are doing is creating a horror/thriller trailer which will reinforce stereotypes about a female being a central protagonist. The main character who is a women who is obsessed mentally and physically with her past relationships and takes out her anger on the men that she is currentlt going out with. She kills men because of the way that she has been treated. We have completed a majority of the tasks that was set for us. The only thing that was left to do is create the script and record our work. We know exactly what to do, therefore this makes it easier for us therefore this enables us to do our work better.By researching trailers which falls into the same category I have learnt some of the different shots that was used as well as different coventions that was used. It also has enabled me to see the types of ideas that they have used. Over the next week, we have decided that we are going to decide what location to use and how we are going to record the shots.

PROGRESS REPORT

As a group we have decided to create a horror/thriller trailer in which the main theme is psychological torment from which the character of our protagonist is born. We are hoping to make a gripping and shocking trailer that easily grabs the viewers attention by using various media conventions. Dark-lighting, under-lighting, parrallel sound and enigma are some of the conventions that our practical production will be consisting of.
So far we
have designed our storyboard which we will be filming from and to create this we did individual research on simialar genre movies like 'Saw', 'Jeepers Creepers' and The Omen. By looking at these films we were able to see what would be best in creating an uneasy and tensed atmosphere in our trailer in order to let the target audience find it interesting and want to view our film.
Filming
should start very soon...so to all our fans out there 'watch this space'!!!

Farah
PROGRESS REPORT

Our prcatical production will be a horror trailer, it is about a woman murderer, she meets this guy and she kills him, she did this many times and now the police know about it, but they still didn't caught her, she killed many guys before, she is doing this because she's getting revenge of what happened to her in the past. our trailer will be about two minutes long.
In all the past lessons we've all been
working on the story boards, and making the blog , each individual form our group have been looking at many horror trailers to get ideas of what kind of scenes we need to include in our productions, when each of us got an idea we present it to the rest of group.
i looked at many horror trailers which are related to our type of genre the ones that i looked at are saw and the omen.
i also drew the story board for
the omen, to get ideas form it, it is not very similair to our trailer i mean by the narrative, but it is similair by the genre of the movie it is a horror.
After having created our blog we will finish working on our story boards and finish what is missing on the next lessons,so we could
start filming as soon as possible.

Outline of practical production and trailer research

Our media production consists of a horror trailer, which will feature a disillusioned female protagonist who as a result of being badly mistreated by men in the past, seeks revenge on innocent men by murdering them.
Throughout this past week, all the group members have been using lesson time to pitch ideas for the story boards, in which we have all contributed.

I have also been collecting relevant research on the conventions of trailers and specific horror trailers; such as "Silence of the lambs" as the narrative proves similar to our trailer. By researching other trailers, it provides me with an insight into the suitable conventins that will need to be present in my trailer, suc
h as the camera shots, mise-en-scene and the duration of a trailer. This sill image taken from "Silence of the lambs", illustrates the low key lighting and creepy effects which will be present in our trailer.

Over the next week, all the group members will be finishing of the storyboards for our trailer and finding suitable locations for our trailer. We also hope to start filming as we will be prepared.
